DESIGN * BUILD CODE * MARKETING * BUSINESS * LEADERSHIP * MENTORS
Being part of the Robotics Club is more than just building a robot. Students develop teamwork, collaboration, engineering and design skills, coding, and business & marketing expertise. Mentors play a vital role in guiding and nurturing these skills.
The creative and technical process of developing a robot that meets the challenge criteria. This involves mechanical design, CAD modeling, prototyping, problem-solving, and often aesthetic branding as well. Being part of the design team uses and develops CAD skills, engineering problem-solving, physics and mechanical systems, creative brainstorming, team collaboration, project management and planning.
This where the ideas and designs from the design and strategy teams are turned into a physical, working robot. The team must work safely, precisely, and on a tight deadline. Building a robot invovles fabrication, assembly, integration, testing/troubleshooting, and maintenence. Being part of the build team involves a variety of skills. Using Hand tools, power tools, following safety protocols, function and uses of mechanical systems, teamwork, and adaptability.
This coding which is sometimes called programming or software development is responsible for controlling the robot’s movements and mechanisms, processing sensor data for autonomous decision-making, creating a user interface for drivers to operate the robot, enabling communication between different robot subsystems, implementing safety checks and fail-safes. The coding team learns different programming languages, software engineering practices, robotics frameworks, algorithms for path planning, sensor fusion, and control, team collaboration on complex software projects and problem-solving under time pressure.
The business and marketing team is just as crucial as the design, build, and coding because it helps the team secure funding, build community support, and spread their story. Without business and marketing, the team might not have the resources or recognition needed to succeed. The business and marketing team works on fundraising & sponsorship, public relations & outreach, branding & team identity, event planning & logistics, leadership & communication. Some of the skills gained are communication and public speakiing, writing and design, event planning and project management, fundraising and budgeting, social media management and content creation, relationship-building and networking.
The leadership plays a vital role in the success and growth of the team. Leadership in robotics is about guiding the team, managing projects, fostering collaboration, and inspiring others to achieve their best. A leadership roles for the team lays the foundation to delveop skills in project management and organization, effective communication and public speaking, conflict resolution and team-building, strategic thinking and decision-making, emotional intelligence and empathy, adaptability and resilience.
Mentors are adult advisors, the backbone that lead to a successful team. They are the guides, coaches, and advisors who help student teams succeed both technically and personally. Mentors bring experience, skills, and encouragement, helping students learn, grow, and navigate the challenges of the robotics season. If you have any of the skills mentioned above and would like to help our team succeed, please consider being a mentor for the Spartobots. The success and longevity of the team depends on you!
